Neurologic Rehab
What is neurologic rehab?
Neurologic rehab is physical therapy for people whose movement, balance, strength, coordination, walking, or daily function has been affected by the nervous system. This can include conditions involving the brain, spinal cord, nerves, or the way the body processes movement and balance.
Neurologic conditions can affect people in very different ways. One person may need help walking more safely after a stroke. Another may need balance training, endurance work, coordination practice, or strategies for managing fatigue. Neurologic rehab starts with a careful evaluation so the plan can match the person's abilities, goals, and safety needs.
At Mountain Town Rehab, treatment focuses on practical function: moving around the home, walking outdoors, getting up from a chair, using stairs, improving balance, building strength, and participating more fully in daily life.
Who benefits from neurologic rehab?
Neurologic rehab may help people with:
- Stroke recovery
- Brain injury or concussion-related movement challenges
- Spinal cord injury
- Parkinson's disease or Parkinsonian movement changes
- Multiple sclerosis
- Peripheral nerve conditions
- Balance, coordination, or gait problems
- Weakness or reduced endurance after a neurologic event
- Difficulty with transfers, walking, stairs, or daily mobility
Therapy may also help caregivers and family members understand safe ways to support mobility at home.
What to expect during treatment
Your first session includes a review of your medical history, current abilities, fall history, home environment, and personal goals. Your therapist may assess strength, balance, coordination, walking, transfers, endurance, range of motion, and how symptoms change with fatigue or task difficulty.
Treatment may include gait training, balance activities, strengthening, stretching, coordination work, posture training, transfer practice, endurance building, and home exercise instruction. When appropriate, therapy may include task-specific practice, such as getting up from a chair, stepping over obstacles, turning safely, or climbing stairs.
Progress can look different for every neurologic condition. We focus on meaningful gains, safer movement, and helping you use your abilities more confidently.

Neurologic rehab FAQs
Can physical therapy help long after a neurologic diagnosis?
Many people can still benefit from therapy months or years after a diagnosis or event, especially when goals involve strength, balance, walking, endurance, safety, or activity participation.
What if I get tired quickly?
Fatigue is common with many neurologic conditions. Your therapist will pace activities, plan rest breaks, and help build endurance gradually.
Can family members attend therapy sessions?
Yes, family or caregivers may be included when it helps with education, home safety, or carryover of exercises and mobility strategies.
Is neurologic rehab the same for every condition?
No. Treatment is based on your evaluation, diagnosis, symptoms, safety needs, and goals. Two people with the same diagnosis may have very different therapy plans.
