Lymphedema

What is lymphedema therapy?

Lymphedema therapy helps manage swelling that can happen when lymph fluid builds up in part of the body, often in an arm or leg. Lymphedema can occur after cancer treatment, lymph node removal, radiation, infection, injury, surgery, vascular issues, or other medical conditions that affect fluid movement.

Physical therapy for lymphedema focuses on reducing swelling, improving comfort, protecting skin health, supporting movement, and teaching long-term self-management strategies. Treatment may include gentle manual techniques, compression education, bandaging or garment guidance, exercise, skin care education, and home strategies.

Lymphedema is often a condition that needs ongoing management rather than a one-time fix. The right plan can help you understand your symptoms, reduce flare-ups, and feel more prepared to care for the affected area.

Who benefits from lymphedema therapy?

Lymphedema therapy may help people with:

  • Arm or leg swelling related to lymph fluid buildup
  • Swelling after cancer treatment or lymph node removal
  • Swelling after surgery, trauma, or infection
  • Heaviness, tightness, aching, or limited motion related to swelling
  • Difficulty fitting clothing, sleeves, shoes, or jewelry due to swelling
  • Need for compression, wrapping, or self-care education
  • Recurring swelling that affects walking, lifting, or daily tasks

Sudden new swelling, redness, warmth, fever, chest symptoms, or calf pain should be discussed with a medical provider promptly, as those symptoms may need medical evaluation before therapy.

What to expect during treatment

Your first visit includes a review of your medical history, swelling pattern, skin condition, comfort, movement, and daily challenges. Your therapist may take measurements to track change over time and will explain what type of care may be appropriate for your situation.

Treatment may include gentle hands-on techniques to support lymph flow, compression education, bandaging when appropriate, exercises that encourage muscle pumping, and instruction in skin care and home management. Your therapist will also help you understand how activity, positioning, compression consistency, and self-care can affect symptoms.

Because lymphedema care is highly individualized, your plan may change as swelling improves or as you learn what works best for your body.

Lymphedema therapy FAQs

Can lymphedema be cured?

Lymphedema is usually managed rather than cured. Therapy can help reduce swelling, improve comfort, and teach strategies that support long-term control.

Will I need compression garments?

Many people with lymphedema use compression as part of management, but the type and timing depend on your condition. Your therapist can help guide the discussion.

Is lymphedema therapy painful?

Treatment is generally gentle. Compression or bandaging may feel different at first, but it should not feel unsafe or overly painful. Tell your therapist if something does not feel right.

Can exercise make lymphedema worse?

Exercise is often part of lymphedema management when it is introduced safely and progressively. Your therapist will help you choose appropriate movement for your situation.
