Aquatic Therapy at Mountain Town Rehab in Mt. Pleasant, MI

Aquatic Therapy

What is aquatic therapy?

Aquatic therapy is physical therapy performed in water. The buoyancy of water supports part of your body weight, which can make movement feel easier and reduce stress on sore joints. Water also provides gentle resistance in many directions, making it useful for strengthening, balance, walking, and mobility work.

For some patients, the pool allows movement that is too painful, stiff, or difficult on land. For others, aquatic therapy is a stepping stone toward land-based exercise. It can help build confidence, reduce fear of movement, and improve activity tolerance in a low-impact setting.

At Mountain Town Rehab, aquatic therapy is guided by your goals and your therapist's evaluation. The plan may include walking drills, balance activities, strengthening, stretching, range of motion, endurance work, or functional movement practice.

Who benefits from aquatic therapy?

Aquatic therapy may help people with:

  • Arthritis or joint pain
  • Back, hip, knee, ankle, or foot pain
  • Weakness or deconditioning
  • Balance concerns or fear of falling
  • Post-surgical recovery when cleared for pool activity
  • Sports or orthopedic injuries
  • Neurologic conditions affecting movement
  • Pediatric therapy needs when water-based treatment is appropriate
  • Pain that limits land-based exercise

Aquatic therapy is not right for every medical situation. Your therapist will review safety considerations, including wound healing, infection risk, pool tolerance, and other health factors.

What to expect during treatment

Your first visit will include a physical therapy evaluation and a discussion about whether aquatic therapy fits your needs. If pool therapy is appropriate, your therapist will guide you through water-based exercises at a level that matches your comfort and ability.

Sessions may include warm-up walking, supported balance work, leg or arm strengthening, gentle stretching, step or gait activities, and endurance exercises. The therapist will monitor how your symptoms respond in the water and afterward.

As you progress, your plan may transition toward more land-based activities so improvements carry over to daily life. For many patients, the pool helps open the door to movement, and land training helps make those gains practical outside the water.

Why choose Mountain Town Rehab for aquatic therapy?

Mountain Town Rehab offers aquatic therapy as part of a personalized rehab plan, not as a generic pool exercise class. Our team includes providers with experience in aquatic therapy, pediatric therapy, neurologic rehab, orthopedic rehab, and post-surgical recovery.

Because our care is one-on-one and family-centered, we can adapt sessions to your comfort level, confidence in the water, mobility needs, and long-term goals.

Aquatic therapy FAQs

Do I need to know how to swim?

Not necessarily. Aquatic therapy is usually performed in a controlled therapy setting with guidance. Tell your therapist about your comfort level in the water.

Is aquatic therapy only for arthritis?

No. It may help with many conditions, including joint pain, weakness, balance concerns, neurologic conditions, orthopedic injuries, and post-surgical recovery when appropriate.

Will I do all of my therapy in the pool?

Not always. Many plans combine aquatic and land-based therapy, especially as strength, balance, and activity tolerance improve.

What should I bring to aquatic therapy?

Bring swimwear or clothing appropriate for the pool, a towel, and any items the clinic recommends. Ask ahead if you are unsure what is needed.
